Watercolor Portrait Demo - Life emerging from paper...

 

   
Step 1 - detailed drawing in graphite on paper Drawing Tools - pencils, kneaded eraser, razor blade, sandpaper, easel
Step 2 - Drawing transferred with carbon paper to 140lb stretched watercolor cotton rug paper Drawing board setup with a reference photo  

Step 3 - Drawing refined with pencil

Step 4 - Entire paper saturated with clean water, left to dry completely    
   
Step 5 - Cobalt blue in dark areas (wet-in-wet) of flesh/hair, light flat wash of Aureolin yellow everywhere else   Cobalt blue watercolor and bushes Step 6 - Few more layers of cobalt blue  
     
Step 7 - Mix of Terre Verde and Burnt Umber to modify to shapes further   Mix of Terre Verde and Burnt Umber (Olive Green)    
     
Step 8 - Milky flat wash of Naples Yellow over all flesh/hair   Milky wash of Naples yellow with a flat brush    
     
Step 9 - Mixture of Cobalt Blue and Burnt Sienna in dark areas, modeling the shapes   Mixture of Cobalt Blue and Burnt Sienna (Grayish Violet)    
     
Step 10 - Red Light in flash/hair areas, except in the lightest lights, Terre Verde in the background and shadows, permanent rose for the blouse   Permanent Rose, Terre Verde and Red Light washes    
     
Step 11 - Light wash of Raw Sienna over flesh and hair   Very light Raw Sienna wash    
     
Step 12 - Cerulean blue into fatty tissue areas and viridian green in shadows   Very light cerulean blue and viridian green washes    
     
Step 13 - Blotchy wash of brown madder over all flash and hair (uneven brushstrokes)   Milky wash of brown madder    
     
Step 14 - Light wash of French Ochre over flesh and hair   Very light French Ochre wash    
     
Step 15 - Dark mix of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber and French Ochre for hair   Dark mix of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber and French Ochre    
     
Step 16 - Venetian Red in dark areas of face and arms, fine lines and details   Venetian Red is in the middle (Brown Madder on top, Light Red below)    
  The last step is open game, lot of work on the fabric, jewlery, bringing in the background and fabric colors into the face and hair in small highlights, and the most important - final light touches of Sennelier Red into the rosy areas of the face and arms, especially the tip of the nose, cheeks, ears, lips. Tiny, barely visible touches of Chinese White in the jewlery, lips, nose and eyes.    
Step 17 - Finished painting, I named it "Primrose"
